Vitamins Deter Toenail and Nail Fungus

Vitamins Deter Toenail and Nail fungus

The single most important thing that you can do to prevent not only everyday ailments and illnesses, but also serious and life threatening diseases is by maintaining a healthy immune system. Eating a well balanced diet gives your immune system the resources to prevent an array of health problems. Additionally, making sure that you are getting enough essential vitamins also keeps you as healthy as possible. One such problem that can be prevented and often alleviated by the proper use of vitamins is nail fungus.

One in every five people will be infected with fungus in their life. Fungi are molds and yeasts that can live in the top layer of the skin and nails. Nail fungus is a common ailment, accounting for nearly half of all nail disorders. This fungal infection can become quite unsightly and painful. Fungal growth at the nail begins with the nail taking on a lackluster appearance and losing its shine. You may also notice a light colored spot under the tip of the fingernail, which may increase in size as the infection progresses. As the fungus grows, it will continue to spread until the entire nail becomes thick and yellow. If no treatment is given to destroy the fungus, the condition will worsen and eventually the nail will have a distorted shape due to crumbling edges. Eventually, the color may become green, brown, or black, and the fingertips may begin to emit a foul odor. The nail may also fall off, causing significant pain.

Even though there is many prescription medications, both oral and topical, that can be suggested to combat nail fungus, most are costly and some are not without undesirable side effects. It is both wise and cost effective to take advantage of a healthy diet and vitamins to ensure that your immune system is strong enough to fight any potential infections, including nail fungus. For people who are currently suffering from nail fungus or for those who are merely prone to the fungal infection the following supplements may be beneficial: vitamin A, vitamin B complex, and vitamin C.

Vitamin A is found in animal products such as eggs and liver and is used significantly in the process of cell division. It is necessary for bone growth, reproduction and it also helps regulate the immune system. Vitamin A is specifically helpful in the fight against nail fungus as it help ensure the reliability of the skin and other mucous membranes to maintain an effective barrier to bacteria, viruses, and fungal infections. Therefore, healthy vitamin A levels can make a positive difference in the case that you should be exposed to nail fungus.

Vitamin B complex includes the full range of B vitamins, including Biotin, Cobalimin, Folic Acid, Niacin, Pantothenic Acid, Pyridoxine, Riboflavin, and Thiamin. These nutrients all work together to promote a healthy nervous system and assist in the metabolism of fats and proteins, as well as ensure the immune system is strong and able to combat infections such as nail fungus.

One of the most common immune boosters is vitamin C. Long known to protect cells, ligaments, and a wide array of bodily tissues, this valuable vitamin is an antioxidant that eliminates free radicals in the body, which can cause severe damage to the cells. Vitamin C protects the system from colds and flu, decreases the risk of heart disease, and prevents certain types of cancers. Additionally, it also relieves skin infections such as eczema and nail fungus.

Preventing any ailment is always much easier than curing it and the best way to maintain good health and an immune system that can successfully fight off potentially harmful infections, such as nail fungus, is to give your body the nutrients it needs to function properly. Once the fungus has been cured and the nail is completely healthy, it is vital to take steps to ensure that the fungus does not return. If you typically have your nails done at a salon, be sure that it is a reputable one that understands the importance of sterilizing all manicure equipment. It also may be necessary to discontinue using nail polish or artificial nails as they can trap moisture under the polish and encourage the growth of fungus. Keeping nails clean and trim is important because fungus can make a home under the nail, especially after contacting fungus that may reside on other fingernails or toenails because of the contagious nature of the fungus. When your hands are to be exposed to water for prolonged periods of time, use rubber gloves and make sure to give the gloves ample time to dry inside out after use. Never pick at hangnails or other skin around the nails; abrasions and open wounds are sure-fire ways to allow fungus into your system.
