Home Remedy For Toenail Fungus

Toenail fungus, also called onychomycosis, affects roughly five percent of the American population.  It occurs when a strain of fungus infects the toenails, causing the nails to become yellow, brittle, and thickened.

Toenail fungus does not typically hurt, unless the nails have become so thickened that they make it painful to wear shoes.  Some people that suffer from toenail fungus simply try to cover up their toenails with nail polish or shoes.  But those cosmetic fixes won’t actually cure the condition.  If this is a problem for you, you may want to try using one of these home remedies for toenail fungus.

Mycozil

By far the most effective home remedy for toenail fungus is the over-the-counter medication, Mycozil.  Mycozil combines several powerful anti-fungal ingredients including pau D’arco, oregano, lemongrass, anise seed, and active horopito to completely rid your toenail of fungal infections. Follow the manufacturers instructions for using this product and you should see noticeable improvement in one to two months and nails that are completely free of infection within three months.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is praised by many as a possible home remedy for toenail fungus.  To try this method, soak your toenails in a basin of half warm water and half natural apple cider vinegar.  Allow your toes to soak for fifteen minutes each day and be sure to thoroughly dry them afterwards. You can also dab undiluted apple cider vinegar on the toenail two or three times a day.  Proponents of this method say that the apple cider vinegar restores the skin’s natural pH balance, making it more resistant to disease.

Tea Tree Oil
Tea Tree Oil is an extract from the Melaleuca alternifolia tree that is endemic to Australia. Tea tree oil has natural antibiotic, antiseptic, and anti-fungal properties.  Using a cotton swab or a small brush, swab tea tree oil under the top edge of the toenail and around the nail two or three times a day.

Oregano Oil

Oregano has antiseptic, antibacterial, anti-parasitic, antiviral, analgesic and anti-fungal properties. It is also a popular home remedy for toenail fungus.  Rub about one dropperful on the infected toenail twice per day and watch your toenail get better as it grows out. Clip the infected part away as it grows.  Be careful, as oil of oregano can be harsh on the rest of your skin.

Distilled Vinegar

Distilled vinegar may be able to prevent fungus from growing. Apply to the toenail with a Q-tip or a cotton ball and spread it around and underneath the toenail and into the cuticle.

Vicks Vaporub

Many people swear by Vicks Vaporub as an effective home remedy for toenail fungus.  Proponents of this method suggest rubbing some Vicks Vaporub on your toenail each day, being sure to cover the entire nail.  One caveat, this product will turn your nail dark until it grows and is clipped away.

Colloidal Silver

Colloidal Silver is known to have anti-fungal properties.  You can either rub some directly on your toes or take a spoonful everyday by mouth to kill off any lingering fungal infections.

Tips For Preventing And Treating Toenail Fungus

Here are a few more practical guidelines that you should follow at home to keep your toenails free of toenail fungus.

Shoes

Choose shoes that fit properly and allow room for your toes to move around and breathe.  If possible, alternate your footwear so that your shoes can air out a little before you wear them again.  Even better, wear open toed-shoes or sandals.

Socks

If you wear socks, find some that are made from 100 percent natural material such as cotton, wool, or silk, because they will wick moisture away from your feet and provide good ventilation. If possible, change your socks at least once throughout the day and wash your socks in hot water after use.

Grooming

Keep your toenails cut short, and do not use nail polish on your toes, as the polish does not allow your toes to breathe. Be sure to dry your nails thoroughly after bathing or soaking in water.  You may want to use a hairdryer set on low setting to be sure that there is no moisture left, particularly in the areas around your toenails and between your toes.  And if you nails have become thickened, trim or file them before applying your home remedy for toenail fungus.
