Ozone Therapy for Candida

Candida, the yeast that is responsible for the development of vaginal yeast infections and thrush, is a fungus that is found in the mouth and other mucus membranes. This fungus or form of yeast, when maintained in a balanced state along with other necessary bacteria, is an essential component of a healthy system. But uncontrolled growth may lead to an imbalanced state and infection that may invade other body structures.

An abundance of candida may cause vaginitis, commonly known as a yeast infection. This condition is especially common in women who are pregnant or taking antibiotics. Women using high estrogen contraceptives are also more susceptible to yeast infections. Common symptoms of a yeast infection are vaginal itching, a white discharge, sensitive skin at the vaginal opening and pain during urination or intercourse. Because the same yeast that causes vaginal yeast infections is responsible for thrush, it may also be spread through oral sex.

Thrush occurs when there is an overgrowth of Candida; this situation often occurs when the immune system is weakened, if there is poor dental hygiene or during pregnancy. Additionally the use or overuse of antibiotics may lead to an overabundance of candida, causing thrush.

Newborns may become infected with it if exposed to candida during birth, with symptoms becoming apparent at 7-10 days of age. Thrush can be an ongoing problem for newborns as the immune system is not yet fully developed and a healthy balance of bacteria and fungus has not been achieved in the mouth. Some cases of thrush present no symptoms, but often those infected will experience white patches in the mouth that may bleed if aggravated. Infected babies may be reluctant to eat due to a sore mouth. Babies also may develop diaper rash as the yeast is passed through the infant's stool. Mothers who breast feed sometimes experience unusually red and sore nipples from the infection.

Although there are many medications available for the treatment of both thrush and vaginal yeast infections, there are numerous safe and natural alternatives to help return the candida levels in the body to healthy levels. One such treatment is known as ozone therapy

Ozone therapy has been used extensively by doctors to treat a wide range of health problems, such as vascular disease, cancer, viral diseases, ulcers, inflammatory bowel diseases and spinal disc problems. Additionally, this treatment is an effective therapy for infected wounds, burns and infections. Ozone therapy is believed to be useful because it breaks down and eliminates toxins from the body by "burning" them through the process of oxidation. White blood cell production is also encouraged, there is an increased delivery of oxygen to the cells, red blood cell flexibility is expanded and metabolism is also stimulated. Because of its ability to kill bacteria and fungus, many cities purify their drinking water with ozone.

Ozone therapy is a means of releasing oxygen into the bloodstream and it can be done in one of several ways, including intravenously, externally or vaginally. For vaginal yeast infections, vaginal insufflation is recommended. This process consists of inserting a tiny tube into the infected area and up to half a liter of pure ozone in a humidified gas is introduced in less than thirty seconds. This treatment, done three times per week, has been reported to alleviate the symptoms of candida imbalance.

 For the treatment of thrush, the most effective application is that of the ozonated olive oil. This substance, available in many natural health stores, is made by bubbling ozone through olive oil for several days until it solidifies. Treating the area infected with thrush by swabbing with a cloth saturated in olive oil is an effective way to reduce both the symptoms and prevalence of the infection. For mother's who may be experiencing a rash on the nipple from breast feeding a child infected with thrush, ozonated olive oil will simultaneously moisturize and sooth the rash and treat the excess candida.

Maintaining a healthy diet and limiting the use of antibiotics will encourage a balanced level of candida in the body and control the occurrence and severity of thrush and vaginal yeast infections. Additionally, it is important to take measures to prevent the contraction and spread of thrush and to maintain an appropriate balance of candida. Good oral hygiene, including daily brushing and flossing as well as using an antiseptic mouthwash, is a must. If thrush has developed, discard and replace any and all infected toothbrushes. In order to restrict the spread of infection, frequently wash hands. It is also important to rinse the mouth out with water after taking a liquid antibiotic to preserve the balance of bacteria in the mouth. To prevent the occurrence of a vaginal yeast infection, it is a good idea to wear loose fitting clothing and do not wear wet clothing such as a swimsuit for extended periods of time.
